THE GSMOL STORY

Over two hundred thirty years ago, the Colonies began their path toward nationhood because they objected to unfair taxation and other violations of human and civil rights.

 

Our mobilehome “forefathers” discovered what every pioneer in this great nation learned, that when you are part of a brand new industry, you must wait for the laws to cover that new industry or you must take action to create new laws.  In 1962, a small group of mobilehome owners in San Jose, California, banded together to prevent unfair tax increases and the Golden State Mobilehome Owners League was born as a not-for-profit corporation serving homeowners in manufactured housing communities.

 

Through the years we have witnesses the trend from “Mom & Pop: park ownership to that of wealthy real estate moguls and huge corporations.  Many  park owners are today’s version of “Robber Barons” who have such tremendous wealth and arrogance that they intimidate cities, not to mention their captive homeowners.  Some have no qualms about spending millions on attorneys to mount repeated attracts against local ordinances, in some cases making the judicial system a War of Attrition as opposed to a mechanism to provide “Justice for All”.  The scales of justice are not always balanced, particularly when individual homeowners try to seek justice by themselves.  GSMOL provides support and solidarity to help level the playing field in the struggle between park owner “Liberty” and homeowners “Justice”.  In the over 48 years of GSMOL advocacy, we have achieved the most extensive set of protective mobilehome laws in the nation.  It is called the California Mobilehome Residency Law.  Unfortunately, there is a limit to the effectiveness of state laws due to a lack of funds, placing a burden on the homeowners to file civil actions to enforce their rights.  Our continuing mission is to mobilize homeowners in each and every local community, to educate them of their rights under Federal, State, and Local laws and to assist them in fighting for those, and greater, protections.

 Mobilehome owners living in investor-owned communities can never afford to rest on their accomplishments.  Threats of unfair taxes, unjust legislation, and violations of homeowner rights are continuing possibilities.  Park owners have a powerful lobbying presence both in the Capital and in many local jurisdictions, not to mention their attorneys hired to exploit any loopholes in the law.  The need to stand unitized and support GSMOL has never been greater.  Membership in GSMOL is a form of homeowner insurance to help protect the value of your investment and preserve your way of life.  We ask that you be a GSMOL “Ambassador” to help promote the League and recruit new members so that GSMOL can provide even greater service, greater protection, and become a more powerful advocate of homeowner rights in the years ahead….
